$UICIDEBOY$ - High Tide in the Snake's Nest (2015)
The album cover sounds exactly like the music on here, believe it or not. I'm always really impressed when an album cover manages to convey that. In fact, I think that's the absolute best album art you can have! Would you have still bought "St. Anger" back in 2003 if the album cover was of a trash can? No? Then you might be $10 richer today. Think about it, dawg.
Alright but look: A huge portion of the time that I was listening to this album, I -knew- $crim produced it, but I kept thinking "where have I heard this before?" because it sounds so familiar but unlike $crim's previous work, and then it hit me: This album almost sounds like the hip-hop equivalent of The Cure's 1982 release "Pornography" to the point where if someone told me that Robert Smith helped $crim come up with the instrumentals, I might just fucking believe it. This shit is dreamy, vapor-ish, and dark, with its instrumentals seemingly coated in a depression-induced drugged-out haze, staring at the ceiling while its wrist drips onto the floor below. $crim and Ruby da Cherry both sound great here, the guest features are decent, with Pouya's in "$outh $ide $uicide (feat. Pouya)" (oh boy, can you imagine if they did a FULL EP by the same name?!) being the best feature on the entire album, and that song goes hard as a motherfucker!! Overall, it's a pretty nice album for relaxing while high, so you can simultaneously feel like a motherfucking O.G. and a sad piece of shit at the same time, much like how I imagine Cage to feel every day of his life. Wait.. I'm not Cage, am I? Oh fuck, I had to check, but I didn't ever put out a song as bad as "Kick Rocks", no.
7/10
