Cattle Decapitation - Karma.Bloody.Karma (2006)
What fuckin' "Mortal Kombat" character is that?
Took a break from reviewing Cattle Decaffeinated albums because they were wearing me the fuck out, and while this album isn't horrible, it's not really an exception to it. Don't get me wrong, it's got some interesting bits on it, like the entirety of "Alone at the Landfill" which shows them focusing more on rhythm and memorable moments than just the nasty, shitty-sounding deathgrind they were doing before that was just "SOUND LIKE YOU'RE VOMITING OVER THESE THIN AND HECTIC GUITAR RIFFS" and nothing else, but there's just so much wasted time on this album that they sound like they haven't learned a fucking thing from their previous releases. See, when that song I just listed ("Alone at the Landfill") is playing, you get a real taste at what they could be on this album: Guitar solos, creepy atmospheres, and even a fucking audible bass guitar at one point, but then the rest of the album (of course I'm sparing some notable moments, credit is where credit's due, I assure you) sounds just like that whole "let's make an EVIL sounding song" shit they were pumping out constantly before. These guys have a real unique sound to them, with Travis Ryan being a technically great vocalist that helps set them apart from other bands in the scene, but they still hadn't found -their- sound as a band to be reckoned with on this release, especially when their sound on this album production-wise leaves a lot to be desired, with the brutality of the music feeling like it has a dampened washcloth on top of it, because there's so many moments on this album that you -know- are supposed to kill the fuck out of you but the guitar just sounds so fucking weak in comparison to what it should be. Check it out if you're already a fan, but newcomers should steer clear.
6/10
