Green Day - Awesome as Fuck (2011)
Man.. The title of this album only really applies like half of the time.
Green Day gets a lot of flack, sometimes deservedly, but one thing you have to give them credit for is that they're still capable of doing live shows with that punk rock energy that they had when growing up and playing horrible shows to five people in shitty dive bars.. When they feel like it. About half of the live album (which, despite them trying to hide it, was recorded at different spots) is "American Idiot" and "21st Century Breakdown" material, and it's almost fucking depressing to listen to, because they just don't even sound like they dig performing that material live, and sure, you've got people screaming for the songs.. Because you've got people screaming for -every- fucking song, it's a Green Day concert and these motherfuckers LOVE Green Day, so who fucking knows if the crowd was actually feeling the material that much, but it's almost fucking hilarious to hear how much more energetic and passionate the band is when performing their older material, and thankfully, there's an 8 song stretch in the middle of the album showing off the band that I'd drop a good amount of cash to experience live, starting with the previously unreleased tune "Cigarettes and Valentines", which was supposed to be the title-track off of their album that was stolen from their studio back in the early 2000s, which frustrated the band so deeply that they abandoned the idea of re-recording the album and made "American Idiot" instead, but regardless, this 8 song stretch is pretty good! Billie Joe Armstrong's guitar sounds powerful, he sounds passionate about his craft, and the band in general plays a lot smoother than this alternative rock shit they throw in to fuck up the pace of the concert.. So why couldn't we get an entire live album, or hell, a TOUR of that? Ah.. If only.
7/10
