Green Day - 21 Guns: Live E.P. (2009)
ONE... TWO... THREE... FOUR... FIVE FUCKING DOLLARS TO BUY THIS OFF OF ITUNES WHEN IT WAS RELEASED! And it only has four tracks! They're fucking nickel and dime-ing us all!! How the hell am I supposed to feed my kids now?! We'll be sucking the moisture off of the walls until payday!!
Man, this definitely ain't the best live recording I've heard in my life, which is pretty shitty considering that this isn't some live bootleg that someone recorded by plugging into the mixer at a gig, this was actually released on iTunes during the height of their fame in 2009! Fuck! Even if it sounded better, the performance of "21 Guns" sounds incredibly phoned-in like the band didn't even want to be there, almost as if to say "I know this song isn't even a year old yet.. But fuck, this song AGAIN? You guys know we have other songs, right?" before ripping into some "Dookie"/"Insomniac"-era classics where the band actually sounds like they're having fun, and really, how can you not? I had a bit of a nostalgia-attack while listening to this, because "Brain Stew" was one of the first guitar riffs I had ever learned, right at my ex-brother-in-law's house who declared it to be "pretty much the easiest song, ever, really" but not at all in a negative light, it's just obvious to everyone that the older Green Day material is where it's at, for the most part, and it feels like even the band can't deny that, given how lackluster the performance of the title track is compared to songs they've been playing (at that point) for 15 years or so. I'm sure Green Day could spend the rest of their days touring the old shit and everyone, including the band, would be happier for it.
6/10
