The Beatles - Please Please Me (1963)
It's kinda hilarious how much better Paul McCartney looks than everyone else on the album cover. All you need to see to understand Beatlemania is just that fucking face.
A lot of people are blinded by the generic opinion of "The Beatles were the best band EVER" and won't hear ANY criticism to do with them whatsoever, but c'mon, guys, this definitely ain't the greatest album you'll ever hear. Sure, there's a few signature cuts on here, like "I Saw Her Standing There", "Misery", and the great cover of "Twist and Shout" where John Lennon's voice was so shot from being sick and recording for 13 hours (which was the entirety of the recording session, fun fact!) which is hilarious in contrast to his vocals on earlier cuts on the album, and dammit, he just sounds GREAT, but really, everyone sounds pretty great vocally on this album, even Ringo Starr's performance on "Boys" (can you imagine how mad this song made people in 1963, due to the homosexual implications?) is pretty great, but ultimately, this album is 42.857142857142854% (I'm not even joking, I calculated it) comprised of covers, and those covers ain't great, dammit! I mean, sure, "Anna (Go to Him)" is pretty alright, but the rest? Nah, I'll pass on that shit and the entire album, really, because despite some choice cuts, a lot of the songs (yes, including "Love Me Do") don't have a lot of replayability. It's a really cool album to hear for the mere novelty of hearing where these four legends started, but I just can't really imagine anyone picking this over pretty much any other Beatles album that I've heard.
6/10
