Jay Rock - From Hood Tales to the Cover of XXL (2010)

Does getting on an XXL cover mean you're eatin' good?.. Heh. That was fucking awful. I hate myself.

Jay Rock, From Hood Tales to the Cover of XXL, Kendrick Lamar, ScHoolboy Q, Ab-Soul, Black Hippy, mixtape, Follow Me Home

Unlike my dad when he's been drinking and ready to share his views on exactly how my older brother's life is going, this is pretty nice! I like (keyword: "like", not "love") every track on here aside from "Black Hippy (feat. Kendrick Lamar, Ab-Soul & ScHoolboy Q)" because Kendrick Lamar sounds like a little fucking sissy on it compared to the others, and overall, I think one of the best things this mixtape has going for it is that the beats aren't complete fucking DatPiff bargain bin garbage like some of the releases that Jay Rock unfortunately chose to let loose onto the public, and the hooks are all pretty good, especially the one provided by Kendrick Lamar in "Follow Me Home" which for some reason isn't on the actual album called "Follow Me Home" because who the fuck knows why not. Despite appearing on the XXL Freshmen list and riding that temporary fame, Jay Rock still sounds pretty fuckin' hungry on this, which, combined with everything I said, makes this a pretty enjoyable mixtape, even if it's not -great-.

7/10
