Misfits - Land of the Dead / Twilight of the Dead (2009)
Oh no no no no...
Apparently at some point before recording this, Marky Ramone left the band because he was tired of shitting on his own legacy (not confirmed, just my suspicions), and then Dez Cadena (at least, I imagine it was Dez's idea. I guess this is all just fucking suspicions) came up with the thought of "Wait, Robo (drummer for Black Flag) was in one of my bands, and also played on "Earth A.D./Wolfs Blood"! Let's get him back in the band!" which is really nice of Dez Cadena to allow his friend the chance to shit on his own legacy as well. If you think having two guys from Black Flag in the band, one of which who previously played on the most hardcore album Misfits have put out, would make the music faster and more dangerous, you're fucking moronic because Jerry Only is still in the band and calling the shots.
What we have here is another release from the band that's just two songs or some shit, and while they're not great by any stretch of the imagination or some shit, they have a little bit of promise to them or some shit. "Land of the Dead" has a nice sound to the drums and some nice fills, even if the lyrics are abysmal, but funnily enough, Glenn Danzig probably would've been able to deliver the lyrics with some ferocity, adding a dark side to it, whereas Jerry Only is just telling some family-friendly story about zombies and shit.
"Twilight of the Dead" is shit that seems to be influenced by rockabilly and if you toned down the lyrics just a little (not because the lyrics are graphic, but because they were much more strict back then) then I can imagine it playing on a jukebox at some local diner in the 1950s on Halloween. For a rockabilly revival band, this is a compliment, but for the Misfits, I repeat, the fucking MISFITS, it's just another time that they've forgotten what band they are in the search to really tone down everything they were known for in a failed attempt to appeal to the kids. This band's discography is just unbelievable.
5/10
