Death Grips - Fashion Week (2015)
This sure ain't "America's Next Top Model" music.
This release is pretty unique at this point in their discography because it doesn't feature MC Ride at all! Nope, just Andy 'Flatlander' Morin and Zach Hill. Who knows why? Maybe YOU know why and you're not telling me, you fucking scoundrel. Anyway, given that Zach Hill is no newcomer to instrumental music, given all of the shit he's been involved with, especially Hella, I went into this with decently high hopes and was a bit let down. Sadface emoticon.
It's hard to talk about tracks on this album, you see, because they're all named "Runway J", "Runway E", "Runway N", etc, essentially spelling out "JENNY DEATH WHEN", a meme that has been now put in museums, so essentially there are three "Runway N" tracks, and so on so forth. For the purpose of this review, I'll be putting a number next to the names that have multiple occurrences on the tracklist. This all being said, "Runway E1" is fucking GREAT, it's a glitchy and pounding motherfucker! It sounds like it NEEDS to be on another Death Grips album with vocals! "Runway N2" is also pretty impressive because Zach Hill's drums carry a great groove, and Flatlander's distorted synths made me originally mistake them for being an actual electric guitar. Part of the song reminds me of "Lowrider" by War, so I guess if George Lopez's show ever needs an edgy reboot, here's the new theme. "Runway H1" is another song that definitely could've found its way onto an actual Death Grips album with vocals, with how catchy it is, and how the synths sound like Zach Hill farting into a microphone. "Runway D" and "Runway A" have a few nice lil dancey moments and shit. Notice how I couldn't say much about those two? Because they're like the rest of this album: Some neat little ideas that don't feel fully fleshed out, due to lack of vocals, lack of focus, and lack of Zach Hill really unleashing on drums much.
BUT HEY, HOW'S 'BOUT THEM MUMFORD AND SONS?! \m/
