Lil Dicky - Professional Rapper (2015)
You gon' bring the heat this time, Dicky? YOU GON' BRING THE HEAT?
Nope! The problem with this album in comparison to his mixtape is that it's really just more of the same, which would be fine if I was a fan of the original style, but nope, it seems like all of my criticisms of the original mixtape are back, most notably being the whole "I'll continue talking for 30 seconds to a minute after the track has ended, on a rant about something that I think you'll find funny" which makes me think that if he's in love with that shit so much, why not become a stand-up comedian? I have faith for him as one given that he seems like a charismatic enough guy, but I just don't fuck with his music.
The worst offender on the entire album is this track called "Pillow Talking (Feat. Brain)" where it's a concept song of him bringing a girl back to his place, and they're about to do the nasty, but then they get into a huge conversation about God, aliens, etc, and everything goes wrong, while his brain occasionally comes in to say that he has to shit during the conversation, over a slow and minimalistic beat. Doesn't sound that bad on paper until you realize THE SONG GOES ON FOR ALMOST 11 FUCKING MINUTES. 11 minutes of him pretending to talk to a girl, pretending to be a girl, and having his brain come in to be all "Yo we gotta shit soon" while Lil Dicky's talking to a girl about downloading an app for Lyft on her phone but she doesn't want to? Is this music? Is this music enjoyed by ANYONE? It's possibly the most avant-garde take on comedy music I've ever fucking heard with no sense of direction or real punchline for 11 minutes of your life.
The only highlights (if I can really call them that) aren't really highlights, just songs that had potential, and they are "Molly (Feat. Brendon Urie of Panic! at the Disco)" because it sees Lil Dicky moving away from the jokes for a moment and talking about how badly he misses a girl, but the chorus is so undeniably cheesy that it takes away from anything that the song had going for it, and the other song being "The Antagonist" where it sounds like Lil Dicky is actually a bit hungry for fame and recognition, but of course, it's Lil Dicky so he could come through with the hardest shit ever and he won't ever get recognition for it.
Not as funny comedy hip-hop as The Lonely Island but he's got a good enough flow to show that he actually has talent and isn't just some corny white boy with a laptop microphone, and he should either drop the comedy shit or just become a stand-up comedian because it just doesn't feel like he can mesh the two together well, which is fine, because not a lot of people can, which makes the ones that can shine like a gem. I have a bit of faith in Lil Dicky but I don't entirely know why.
Oh yeah and "Hannibal Interlude (Feat. Hannibal Buress)" is the funniest thing on the entire album but that's to be expected. Hannibal Buress renegaded Lil Dicky.
4/10
