Misfits - Static Age (1997)
TV CASUALTY, TV CASUALTY!!!
Believe it or not, the Misfits had an ENTIRE album that was recorded in 1978 that was never released, Glenn Danzig and all, that was finally released in 1997 (ain't that crazy?!) containing what would've been their debut album, and it's NEAT! They still hadn't discovered a hardcore tinge to their music, so while it's just a meat-and-potatoes punk rock record, there's some influence from some other shit on here that I am NOT smart enough to name but you KNOW there's some other influence or some shit.
The band here is arguably even nastier than later, with the entirety of "Last Caress" despite being an excellent song, being a pretty much non-stop trigger warning that makes you think "MUSIC LIKE THIS WAS BEING MADE IN 1978?!" and then daze off upon looking out a mirror, remembering that moms and dads were children/teenagers once, too, and they had SEX. They probably had sex a LOT of times before you were conceived!! And probably not even with just each other!! Ah well, you know how it goes.
This album is packed with classic songs you HAVE to know as a Misfits fan. "We Are 138", "Teenagers From Mars", "Bullet"?? GOOD SHIT!! And to top it off, the bass is pretty audible for damn near all of the album, complimenting the great riffs with some THWOMP THWOMP THWOMP! Sure, there are a few songs that just don't do anything for me, like the five minute long "Come Back" which might as well be five hours in Misfits time, but this is a great album and I'm pretty happy about that, especially given that this could've been shelved forever and ever and ever and not ever been in my ears. You know what I want out of my ears? This fucking tinnitus. "Why are you so mad? It's constant white noise! I have to sleep with a fan on!" MY ASS!!
8/10
