Misfits - American Psycho (1997)
I hope the free poster is of Jerry Only in a hot tub full of Ben Franklin's!!
So after the Misfits disbanded in 1983 due to tensions in the band and all of that shit, bassist Jerry Only and guitarist Doyle Wolfgang von Frankenstein decided that the Misfits brought too much evil into the world and decided to, for whatever reason, start a Christian metal band called Kryst the Conqueror that never took off or even officially released an album, because who the hell would want it anyway? Some time after realizing how moronic of an idea that was, they got the idea to start the Misfits back up again and release a new album, almost fifteen years later. The vocalist? Not Glenn Danzig, he didn't want any part in this shit, but rather, a young guy who goes by Michale Graves who had never even listened to the Misfits before. It has "cash-in" written all over it!.. But it's GREAT!!
A huge criticism of the band at this point in time is "NO DANZIG = NO MISFITS" and while there is a huge change in atmosphere, music, and even lyrics because they can be quite cheesy on this album, as they rely on old horror movie themes (like the Danzig-era did) but in a "ooh, so spooky!!" way as opposed to Danzig's evil, but the riffs are better, the songs are even catchier, and they DON'T sound like they were recorded in a garage!! You get a little bit of everything here, but they exchange their old hardcore punk sound for a more heavy metal-esque sound at times, such as the catchy as shit "Crimson Ghost" with its loud riffs and distorted bass, leading into a catchy chorus of "NEVERGONNAGETME, NEVERGONNAGETME, NEVERGONNAGETME I'M THE CRIMSON GHOST!!" making it a notable stand-out track, but to be honest with you, nearly all of these are if you just OPEN YOUR MIND and OPEN YER FUCKIN EARS!! Graves is no Danzig but that's GREAT because he's not trying to be, dammit!! KID'S GOT A GOOD VOICE COMIN' OUT OF HIS NECK!! DIGGIN' THEM SOUNDS LIKE HE'S DIGGIN' UP BONES!!
The tracks "American Psycho", "Walk Among Us", and the best-selling single from the album "Dig Up Her Bones" are all fantastic songs that (Keep in mind, I haven't exactly kept up with the Misfits' live setlists over the years) should become staples at live shows for the band, if they haven't already, but damn, I'd pay even just to see this line-up perform this album! It's a fun time worthy of dressing up as a ghost for and jitterbugging around your living room while listening to it, but just don't go to any parties afterwards: My friend and I were walking down the street, him still in costume, and went to a local house party that consisted entirely of black people. Everyone stopped talking as soon as my friend stepped in, they jumped him, and I had to help drown my own friend in the pool just to save my own ass. I still hear his cries of "I'M- *gasps for breath* A GH- *drowning*" in my dreams from time to time, as if my friend is checking up on me, but oh well: That's some SPOOKY shit!!
8/10
