mc chris - life's a bitch and i'm her pimp (2001)

mc chris, life's a bitch and i'm her pimp, nerdcore, fett's vette, adult swim, dq blizzard

mc chris (free of capitalization) is a nerdcore rapper that somehow doesn’t follow the #1 rule of nerdcore: He doesn’t suck complete ass. In fact, he’s actually quite entertaining and relatively skillful, if you don’t mind his high-pitched voice and his sometimes bizarre subject matter, but for those who don’t need to constantly take hip-hop seriously, his music can be quite a treat.

This EP is only eight tracks long, an- Holy shit, FOUR of these bitches are skits! What the hell? They aren’t even particularly notable. I hope no one paid that much for this CD back in the day.. That aside, I’ll try to put away my immediate disdain for four skits on an eight track EP. Just bear with me..

The subject matter of mc chris’ raps on this EP go from everything from DQ Blizzards, the heart-warming American past-time of getting #BTFO’d off of cough syrup, being unnaturally angry at beautiful women you can’t have, and Boba Fett (of Star Wars fame) talking about his Corvette.. You know, usual stereotypical hip-hop shit.

What mc chris uses to full advantage is that unlike a lot of rappers in the nerdcore genre, it doesn’t feel like he’s pandering to nerds using cringe “Whoa, I’m a nerd! A nerd who RAPS! HAHA!” humor that can occasionally (read: a solid majority of the genre) plague the genre like a disease to the ears of all who aren’t easily impressed by the concept of nerds rapping.

The beats are pretty good for what they are, but “Fett’s Vette” is sure to bump in your headphones, and along with the memorable lyrics, will remain stuck in your head for quite a while. That song is legitimately great, (gimmicky?) lyrical content or not, and don’t get me started on the neat sample of the intro of "California Ãœber Alles" by Dead Kennedys, followed by a sample of Blink-182's "Dysentery Gary" being played on a keyboard (?) during “DQ Blizzard”.

If you’re a hip-hop head who has listened to the classic records a million times over, this probably won’t appeal to you, but for everyone else who wants accessible, catchy, fun hip-hop, you can’t go wrong with mc chris ranting about his odd interests in your ears for just short of 13 minutes, if you disregard the sk- OH GOD THERE’S FOUR SKITS ON AN EIGHT TRACK EP HOW COULD GOD LET THIS HAPPEN

7/10
